Gfx Con, Computer Round 1: Me vs Chaos Angel vs JonMartenson

Post by SSJVegita0609 » Wed Mar 05, 2003 8:50 pm

Alrighty, here are the rules for Computer:

1: No Ripping or copying other people's stuff! (I swear, if I see anyone break this rule they're getting a backhand of doom :P )
2: You may use hand drawn stuff if you want, just as long as its edited in some way using a computer (colored, shaded, effect-ified, etc)
3: JPG or GIF only, no bitmaps, etc.
4: You may use copied outside characters (from anime, etc), but the image must have at least 75% original content (This rule can be bended I suppose, IM me with your image if you want to debate it, collagues count as original work).
5: All programs are acceptable (PSP7, PS7, 3DSM, POVRay, etc)
6: Your image, whatever it may be, should be completely done by you, with no help from anyone else (please no co-op works).
7: Images may be any size, however, if your pic is bigger than 1024x768 please post a link to it and not place the actual image on the forums in order to prevent obscure stretching.
8: Images must be submitted by this sunday (3/9) night at midnight (as in monday morning) EST.
9: First to 7 votes wins.
10: You may not vote in threads in which you are participating, but may vote in all others.

Do not start voting until both entries for this thread have been submitted. Good Luck!

I've got my computer-entry done. I tried to do something different from what most people will probably do (based on the entries I remember from the previous grfx contest). Although I don't expect to win with this, I didn't want to enter another filter-whore piece like I did in the last one (seeing as I didn't get even one vote... ::sniff::), so I at least hope people acknowledge the deviancy from my usual style and the attempt to do something different.

The text is from a cross-over strip between two webcomics, Oh My Gods, and Divinities. I haven't read Divinities yet, but Oh My Gods is great, so here is the link to it.

Done entirely in Photoshop 7. Word, yo.

Ok, here is my entry. It started out as a translucent blooming flower, spewing glowing pollen into the air. I was going to put it in photoshop and do all of the little stuff that tends to be the "craze" amongst "GFX artists" (filters, small text, grids, filters, boxed areas of altered gamma and hue, filters, etc). Instead, I decided to make a still life production (mainly because I wanted to enter hand-drawn also, but had no way of transfering anything I do by hand to my computer).

This is a minimalistic still life of a redwood table with a glass-top and a laptop, light, and flower vase (minus the flowers :) ) The slight green showing up on the edge of the desk top is form the glass, meant to be just like you would see on regular glass top table as your POV gets closer to horizontal with the table/desk top. The computer screen is an actuall screen shot from when I was working on the flower.

I realize that we may get a good bit of traffic through here, and this is a file around 100K on geocities. So I also will post these 5 small pics from different angles using picturestage (400x400 limit)

I'm really proudest of the lamp, I feel it looks the most realistic. I would have added speakers and cords for the computer and improved the textures, but I am in a rush. I leave tommorrow (no, wait...today. It's really early in the moring here) to go home. I probably won't be able to post for the next week (gone on spring break XD )

This is the screen shot from when I was working on the flower.

Mirror for Screenshot

My mediums:
Cinema 4D XL R6 (almost all work was done here)
Flash MX (for some textures)

Inspiration:
My desk lamp
My room mates vase
Apple powerbook

Total time:
Rendering-8 minutes for the flower, 1-2 minutes for the desktop when I wanted to preview it.
Working on it- More time than I wanted to spend :?

JonMort ... u ever use 3dsm? ..
...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.
I've seen it happen, man! I've SEEN IT!..

No. I use this program through my school. I geuss I really shouldn't have it anymore, but I feel better about using this than something cracked off the net (It's licensed for 30 seats, but I'm about the 33rd :? )

Actually I got to play with Autodesk and 3DSM for a day or two last year. I really like the potential of 3DSM (Cinema 4D isn't as flexable)

i can pretty much do the basics through 3dsm .. that proggy your using cant be all that bad .. because that pic is damned nice .. i thought it was done on 3d sm at 1st .. until u said the proggy u were using was in the screens
I especially like the textures u used on the lamp.. woulda taken alot of tweaking in 3d for me just to get em to look right like that .. with just the right type of reflection.. nj on the project. (I wont vote in the GFX contest cause im partial to this pic)
