uh, all religions don't believe in god. Some religions believe in heaven (which has diffrent names) but not in a god.ayanami_soul wrote:pentecostal christian.....I don't see the point in all these religions...how many christianities r there!? all religions believe in God..THEY JUST HAVE DIFFERENT NAMES
And others such as humanist and atheist don't believe in god at all.

And it also depends on how you define 'god.' Because some people use it to mean a deity that is all-knowing and all-powerful. But the Native Americans believed in several flawed gods, along with Greek, Roman, and Norse peoples. And then there's the Japanese Shinto, which is basically worshipping nature, but not to say they are Druids. There's a difference. Shinto celebrates all life and sees everything and everyone as divine.
And there's a lot to Atheism besides just a disbelief in God. If any of you are familiar with existentialism, that plays a big part in Atheism.

yeah it is true. You can't just not believe anything(damn double negative). Most people who are atheists are brought up in some religion but choose not to believe because they have their own theory on life which is basically what existentialism is along with asking that eternal question, why are we here.

The thing I don't like about how atheism is looking here is how some are assuming it means you don't care or live for anything. True that I think there is no greater purpose, but isn't making our lives happy and using our experiences to better the lives of others worth life?
I care about other people and try to be as nice as I can to people I don't know yet or those who deserve it. I don't just respect people because of rank or title. People I don't respect are treated with defense instead of offense (as in completely ignore
)
I don't think atheists go about life without any faith in anything. Just hope for those things that could happen. I'm the second kind of person in Signs...too bad they make it seem so bad in that particular situation. But I didn't change my mind because of something horrible.
I was raised to accept those things I did not understand and to never question those that claim to have the answers. I was the first person (not just woman) in my family to go to a 4 year institution. I am also currently the only person not living on the farmland owned by my grandfather on my mother's side of the family.
What happened to me was I was offered the opportunity to learn about the things that religion had claimed to already have mystical answers for. I learned about the World and the people. I learned about evolution and how much sense it made to look at the planet and how we are shaped by it.
Anyone who doesn't believe in evolution should look at the animals we domesticate. The dog, cat, horse, rabbit breeds we can continue to create NEW show that we are making animals not orginally here before. Given years to have their genes mutate further will most likely make seperate species and not simply breeds like horses and cattle that continue to grow into...ahhhh...I'm getting off topic
My point is that I believe heaven and hell is here on Earth...because it's what we make it for ourselves. It's our one fluke chance at experience and we should enjoy it to the fullest but not forget that other people matter as much as ourselves. I don't really consider myself a humanist though because that's as far with that as I go.

No, actually there is more to it. It delves into philosophy. Why else would they give it such a nifty name?Chao wrote:Not true, atheism is simply a lack of belief in a religion (and is not itself a religion).

Atheism focuses more on people and self. Mainly self, it also tries to define life without vanities and conventions. There's different kinds of Atheists, mainly separated by what they believe is human nature. Good, or evil. Differences made clear by different philosophers. Sartre, for example, believed that you owed an obligation to humanity to strive for the good of all and that was part of your purpose. Nietzsche, however, believed, simplistically, in survival of the fittest. The strong live, the weak die, and the strong are not obligated except to themselves.
Ultimately, Atheism is being entirely true to yourself by recognizing doubt and ridding yourself of it by trying to find the absolute truth.

you know, NO ONE is reading ANYTHING anyone else posts. everyone is just writing exxays on what they think and it's going completly un noticed, I think this entire topic is a waste of time and effort.
The only stuff getting responded to are small short inaccurate facts like above, then people write a page about it and no one reads it.
I think this thread is a lost cause, unless you like to write even though you know no one's reading or cares.
