Why do you feel sorry for him? I'm sure it's not his only motivation. I mean i make my AMVs for myself and others to watch, others come second. Although i dont deny that i got a great feeling when Souls and Shells was top of the star ratings list, even if it was only for a couple of days.
Whether or not it's his only motivation or not, I think even including scoring as a motivating factor to make good work is a really stupid thing to do.

If you want to do something (and presumably, people want to make AMVs), then I don't why you'd need an external reason to do it well.
I don't think that the people who ask for scorings and ops on their vids are wanting motivation to do good work. I think they use them in order to do better work. Of course, that only happens when someone takes the time to actually tell you where you can improve. That's why, whenever I give scores, I try to explain the reasons behind it so that the person I'm scoring can get better. Not for others, but for themselves.

Kind of like how you might help a kid to shoot a basketball better. It's not so others can enjoy watching him shoot the ball, but so that he can enjoy taking more shots himself.
Strength without the wisdom to harness it is as useless as a sail with a hole.

If this community is your only motivation to make videos, I feel sorry for you. In fact, I made my first few music videos without even knowing about the .org. Does "fame" (within a tiny internet community) really mean that much to you?

I certainly hope not and that I'm misinterpretting something.

Hey,

dwchang and trythil. Your holier-than-thou attitude is really starting to bug me.

Just because everyones motivation for making AMVs isn't exactly the same as yours doesn't give you the right to go around patronizing them. Who cares why they do it, as long as they do it and have fun in the process.

And before you say something like, "Oh but they only do it for recognition" or somesuch, really, thats okay. Again if they enjoy doing it, the outside force that actually gets them moving is pretty null.

So please, get off your soapboxes.

You're not the only one.

Tone it down a bit guys, you're no better than a lot of us here.

Well y'see since this board and thread is about stating one's opinion...I stated mine, just as you are stating yours right now. It's not like he or I have the "power" to force people ot make videos for particular reasons/motivations, but at the same time, we have every right to feel the way we do about the particular situation yes?

If anyone is on a soapbox, I'd say it's you since you seem to be against the sharing of ideas and opinions.

I guess that's a bit harsh, but honestly, I do feel sorry for those who do this for the reasons listed earlier. I guess I shouldn't since they have fun, but from my POV (which is what everyone uses), I couldn't see myself doing that and being happy.

Perhaps it's the whole "walk a 1000 miles in someone else's shoes" or whatever, but again...just a matter of opinion. Sorry to have offended you.

No offense Flint (and really, you're my friend and wuver), but I honestly don't know where people come up with this "holier than thou" thing. I guess it irks me because this isn't the first-time someone has said that (well not to me in particular, but in general). I know for a fact that a lot of people are really irked about just that (no not the "holier than thou" part), but this assumption that it exists.

Honestly, I don't know about Trythil, but I'm just stating my opinion and don't mean to belittle anyone. Kosher?

Then it's just your personality and you won't be bothered about it.

I sort of agree with dwchang, though I can understand the attitude qualm as well.

I guess it depends on your opinion.

Personally, since I accept AMV's as an artform but not as a sport, my opinion is same as dwchang's and trythil's.

If you see a competitive side in AMV's, I realize you may have a different POV.

the part that irks me is the "i feel sorry for you," not that it's not true that there's other reasons and some of them are better, but having that phrase with that context makes it sound like they are doing something wrong.

anyway, my two cents.
