LoL, yeah sorry about that. SO2's story was pretty good. I just meant that the gameplay was by far the highlight of the game and looked to be in the first one too, so I figure as long as that's still good I can still enjoy it even if the story's mediocre.

Am I one of the few people who believe that Square isn't sliding? That they're continuing to give us original and great games? I believe sometimes people refuse to compare the new ones with the classics like IV and VI, although I believe they give them a run for their money.
The comment about FFX being too different is hardly a reason to downplay it. FFIX was the tribute game to all of the old style FFs, most people knew things were going to change, and most of the hardcore people didn't like that. But if they continued to release FF after FF in the same style when would it get boring? XXIV? FFX was a great game, if a bit linear throughout. But it countered this with massive sidequests (well, in the International and PAL versions anyway).
Kingdom Hearts was one of the most refreshing games I've played in a long time, really fun, and in a direction I'd never expect Square to go. Plus I got to see Cloud and Sephiroth again! 8) After buying it as an excuse to see them again, I was knocked off my feet.
Too many people are criticising Square nowadays for their current direction (online FFXI and spin-off FFX-2), comparing them to their prime of yesteryear, but I still think most RPGs now and then rarely ever hold a candle to Square games.
The RPG's I've played on the PS2 haven't been that great, but after hearing Sub0's acclaim for Shadow Hearts I'm gonna have to check it out.
And the Chrono Break news I've heard has actually been quite well-founded, reputedly coming from the mouth of Square itself. All in all more plausible than the FFVII remakes. A man can dream though, a man can dream...

All hail SQUARE!!!
no, Square is one of the better rpg makers but not the best and deffinitely not a fave. they make good rpgs like... anything FF (cept the movie, 8 imo and Mystic Quest, FFAdv dunno bout FFU) and Chrono (though I don't know who to blame for that... Sq or EA??) and Vagrant Story... Xenogears. crap that's Bouncer that FF7 fighter et all.
Now like Sega thats everything to everybody (can't think of a game genre they aren't in... and anime's decent).... well I'll stop there.

Heh, personally I was never quite a Sega fanboy, very much a Sonic one, and loved my Mega Drive to death, the SNES in this country sucked so much ass without hardly any RPGs save Zelda. So when VII came along I pretty much became a Square fanboy and went out of my way to play every Square game. And by the by, who made Shadow Hearts?Sub0 wrote:err you mentioned methat's cool, ignore my ravings of a Sega fanboy and play SH ;-p

My fave game that I haven't played ;-p that company, Sacnoth, is made up of X-Square employees (janitors... possibly ;-p but they cleaned the crap of Chrono Trigger ppl!!) and I don't just like them cuz I'm an old sentimental fool I played and LOVE their NGPC game, Faselei!.... oh and they did used to be owned by SNK... yeah and SH's prequal, Koudelka (PS1), I was looking at for YEARS... that was before I was aware of Sacnoth's involvement.

those 'r the only three they have on their site (may have had a hand in some of SNK's projects but according to gfaqs they formed after FF3 or around then, then SNK quickly bought them and when SNK went kaput they were on their own. they also made an NGPC game called Dive Alert but I didn't like it... hardcore sub ppl did afaik)

People should understand that there are other RPGs out there that are almost as good as what all Squaresoft fans say to be the best RPGs, need to see that there are RPGs out there that are almost as good and some of them being better. Squaresoft got me annoyed the way they over hyped FF X and KH so much yet when I got both of them, I didn't think too highly of them, maybe if they didn't hype so much I would have a slighter interest in those 2 games since they were pretty good and kept me occupied for some time. All Squaresoft fans will probably hate Legaia 2 and Wild Arms 3 since they are more based upon old school RPGers but if you're willing to try something outside Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, those 2 games are pretty damn good considering they are sort of underrated, Shadow Hearts is probably your best bet since it has a well done storyline in a dark setting and the characters are really good(especially Yuri, the game's main character), Grandia Xtreme is just based on dungeons and battle so if you don't care about story at all... go for that.
Ok I'm done laying it into Squaresoft now. I'll just wait and see if FF XII is going to be good (not getting FF XI because I don't wanna play online and you have to pay a monthly fee to play and I can't really picture an FF being online) I WON'T get FF X-2 since I didn't think too highly of FF X.
