The same thing basically happened to me except over the timespan of about 9 months. I was good friends with this girl for awhile and then I fell for her as happens when guys and girls are close friends for too long (so it seems) and I didnt say anything for a few months until I finally mentioned it to a mutual friend who told me I'd be best off just forgetting about it :/
so I did. Easiest way to get over someone is to avoid them. Anyway if dave (wuwu) comes around he should have some good advice seeing as he went through the whole ana thing.
suggestion: read/watch love hina.
Saddest thing...

I've had an experience a LOT like yours...it's pretty painful stuff.
I was in sixth grade. My all boys' school was putting on a Christmas Pageant, and they needed a girl actor. They hired "Mindy" (name changed), who was in fifth grade. I fell in "love at first sight." She was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen in my entire life. I couldn't get enough of seeing her act on stage.
Well, as it turns out, a year after the Christmas Pageant, my family switched churches, and guess who attended that church? You got it, my dream girl attended that church. So I saw her every Sunday and my interest in her grew.
When I was in 7th grade, my younger brother developed a close friendship with "Joey," some kid at his school. And guess who Joey's older sister was? Yup, you got it! It was Mindy. I was floored. Now our families would get together for special events.
My school has small Bible discussion groups that are taught by an alumnus of the school. In 7th grade I met my group leader, and GUESS WHO IT WAS? IT WAS MINDY'S UNCLE! I was reminded of her CONSTANTLY.
All this time, I never spoke a word to Mindy about my feelings. We developed a casual friendship, but I never told her.
Well, just recently, I got up the guts to communicate my feelings to her. yay! I'm in the 10th grade, by the way, so it'd been a good 4 years until I told her. And guess what she said? She doesn't like me. Nope, not even interested. She said I don't even know the guy who she likes.
SO I'm reminded of this hurt every time I go to church, every time my brother is with his friends, every week when I meet with my Bible discussion group. It's not fun.
I've concluded one thing from this experience, though. If I get married, my wife will be ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I say this because, when I had a crush on Mindy, I thought there was no one on Earth as pretty kind, intelligent, etc. as Mindy. It turns out that there IS someone prettier, kinder, more intelligent than Mindy...I just haven't met her yet.
Moral of the story: don't give up, man. Keep going for it. You'll find your perfect wife some day!!

Oh, yeah, I also wanted to respond to your question "have you cared for them or helped them through a lot of situations?"
I still care for Mindy and make sure that she's provided for whenever I'm around. I see her quite frequently, probably about five times a week for hourlong periods or so, and when I'm near her, I always am aware of where she is and if she needs something. I still watch out for her even though she says she doesn't like me. It's actually a pretty neat feeling to do that for someone.

Well, I guess telling the girl and getting rejected is worse than not telling her and someone else getting the girl. Maybe not. I guess it brings you closure if you get rejected. Never telling her and having someone else come in doesn't really give you closure. It keeps naggin' on you if you know what I'm saying. Decisions decisions...lol...

Here's my advice: TELL HER! It nagged me for SO LONG...I couldn't get the thought of asking her out of my head. It was torture. I'd ask her. Being rejected allowed for two thing: First, as stated, I knew that there had to be someone even cooler than she was out there. Secondly, it really allowed me to become more of a friend to her, without having to worry about how I act around her.
My advice would be to tell her in any fashion you want. I say that there is no particular way to ask her, just be kind and humble.
IF you decide to tell her (insert subliminal message: TELL HER) I'd love to hear how it went and how you feel aobut asking her. I felt so FREE after I asked Mindy...you probably will, too.
