The entire "omg I can't breathe ANGST!!!!!! I cannot LIVE without being with this person EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY!!!" type of popular love, especially when espoused by teenagers (which it usually is), I chalk up to hormones.
I was never that bad, but I remember being clearly warped by a rush of <s>stupidity</s> excitement, where I actually liked being around my now-insignificant other and thought he was just the greatest. But he wasn't. Hormones.
Granted, most relationships move past that stage and get into a more meaningful connection not based on "OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOGOGMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!!!!!111one!" But I don't trust that first flush of starry shoujo-bubble candyland wonderfulness. It doesn't last.

Re: Love
well put Mr. Pilkington ^_^ AGREEDMr Pilkington wrote:Disagreed! The number one driving human force is not reproduction, it is infact destruction. Look around you! Indeed reproduction is heavy, but the amount of destructive human behavior exhibited day to day vastly outweighs reproduction by and easy scale of 4:1. Hell, the fact that many use sex as a means by which to relieve tension is alone proof enough. Then ponder the remaining evidence!

Anyway, I've come to believe that love is not rooted about the act of reproduction. I believe it is an evolutionary mechanism, designed to aid the furthering of the species. Being the highly social beings we are, and being defenseless for the first 15 years of our lives, there is a far greater chance for survival in a familiar environment. Love encourages the males of our species to stick with their reproductive partners and contribute to the raising of their offspring, thus improving the chances for survival of the species, and the passing on of our genetic traits.
I like bugging people. Deal with it.

Unfortunately the whole 'love is grounded in sex evolutionarily' thing is missing a little bit of detail, because sex is the exact opposite of reproduction. But yes, I can concede that 'popular love' might in some respect be linked to choosing lifelong reproductive partners, that's not the whole thing. Social influences has to have some effect.

After reading this topic it got me wondering. Is it really about reproduction? Now that I think about it, what about couples who can't have children? Clearly they dont fall in love for reproduction purposes, so how can reproduction be why they fell in love? Just a thought.

But then what would keep them together for 10 or 15 years. I''m not saying that they still dont have the need to reproduce, but what besides love could keep them together for that long?flint_the_dwarf wrote:Even if they're sterile, they still have that part of the brain.
Not stating my view on this yet.
BTW, I know a couple who have this problem, they have been together that long and are as in love with each other as they were when they first got married.
