The USSR's Communism was self proclaimed, so I consider it to be the "ultra-corrupt Communism". Its still Communism though, mainly due to their economic policies.
A lot of things get self proclaimed but are still lies. What Otohiko probably meant to say was that the USSR and every other "Communist" states were not socialist by the criteria of western democratic socialists, such as Orwell, Debs, and oh, some fellows by the names of Marx and Engels. Stalinism is more like a theocracy set to music by Gracchus Babeuf.

Remember, Christ was a communist. (If he ever existed that is)

Oh I understand what he meant completely. My issue with Communism is that I believe there's no feasible way for it to exist WITHOUT that corruption. Any system which calls for an extremely powerful and highly centralized government is NOT going to get benevolent people in power.

In a perfect world with perfect people, Communism would work, but in a perfect world with perfect people there'd be no need for communism.

The same can pretty much be said for democratic socialism, great idea on paper, catastrophy when tried in the real world (Look at many Eastern European countries).

I wholeheartedly concur. Communism is a great system, in a benevolent, utopian world.
It works in a world where the country is run by citizens.
It just doesn't work in countries where the predominant role is as a consumer - read: PEOPLE WANT MONEY or it's equivalent.

But consider, we live in a socialist world. Although I'd definitely say that the people in China and Japan (generally, Asians) are more altruistic than we are, you have to give it to the Americans that can use Sho-Rack newspaper vending machines and not have somebody take the whole stack. Or, to the peopel who only take one free item when it says "help yourself". And such.

If it's not liberal, I automatically disagree with American policy:

well our government was originally set up to put checks and balances on each government member. but somehow that's failed, and now we have a president who lost the popular vote and can declare war without congress.

living organisms are naturally self-interested, but that doesn't completely rule out altruism. the key to altruism (beyond family members) is reciprocity, the ability to monitor who reciprocates and who doesn't, and the enforcement of reward to reciprocators and punishment of non-reciprocators. this has been achieved on small scales -- farmers in Valencia who must share a water supply do so by monitoring those who collect their water and how much they collect. achieving this on a large scale has proved much more difficult, especially when no one has the power to enforce punishment on the cheaters (U.S. government).

Not if their brother is the governer of Florida...

o!!!!!

Anyways, Communism is a faulty system due to its massively easy susceptablity to corruption. And the more corrupt a Communist government is, the worse off the economy becomes, as can be seen by Soviet Russia. However, the same is ALSO true for Capitalism. Ever hear of a little group of people called the Oligarks? They happen to be the incredibly corrupt capitalists who provided the finacial backing that would transform Russia from Communism to Democracy. And look at the country now, a stunning image of economic and social meltdown.

The point of this post? Corruption occurs in every system, be it capitalist or communist. All we can hope for is a leader who actually wants to do what's best for the people without bothering with their own personal success or their party's political power.

/fin

Corruption and Greed are Indeed parts of every human system of goverment. But nowhere near as bad here as in a country where people have no rights.
