Smart weapons are a beutiful media scam.

You realize this very well when you deal with them more closely. There's still a series of technical limitations to them, and remember:

Smart weapons are only about as smart as the men guiding them.

Which is, the pilots, though to a much greater extent - the command staff that determined the targets (I don't blame pilots, generally).

In fact, the precision of modern aiming systems for 'dumb' weapons today isn't much less accurate, and they still account for most of the payload used.
And don't forget the little beast we call Cluster Bomb, a very real and commonly acknowledged Weapon of Mass Destruction.

Carpet bombing was occuring good and well in Afghanistan a couple of years back...

So really, air war, from the perspective of those on the ground, hasn't changed all that much. It's still hell.

I have to say that, unfortunately, the basis of this arguement has shifted to the point where we are arguing our own fiercly personal opinions. We both agree on the facts about what's going on. However, our interpretations of those fact and our reactions to the situation are very different. I've stated what I believe and you've stated what you believe, and at this point I don't think that either one of us is willing to change our minds about the issues at hand. Regardless, it has been a pleasent debate (Reminds me of the ones I used to have here back in the day).
