Do you ever see this girl on a daily occasion? i.e. School or work?
If so, just find something you think you could converse about and follow with that. My friend tried the IM thing when we were in Junior high, the girl got freaked out. I mean, you're going to eventually want to hang out with this girl in real life...sooo...

you should just make yourself do it. Change yourself for the better by being a tad more outgoing. And if she freaks out or what not when you go up to talk to her, the world won't end. Besides, You wouldn't want to be with a girl that was rude anyways ( if she is rude to you when you try and be plain old friendly)

And if the above happens, there's always other girls who you haven't discovered yet.

really try and push yourself tho, I was just like you, but then I just decided, I'm tired of being alone because I'm quiet, so I just started to be a partygoer. Haven't been alone since 8)

I don't think you have his personality quite pegged... it's not that he's afraid of going up to her, he just doesn't know how she'll react. Not every girl will react the same as the one in your example. Or maybe I'm just horribly wrong.

No no, I'm uncomfortable about approaching her beause it would just not work at all. There's nothing I could do that would make approaching her seem remotely normal.
However, I don't think it would be too impossible to make work after I break the ice. Like I said, she seems kind of deprived of affection (omfg kind of like someone I know :\) and I've noticed exchanged glances in the halls and such. Then again, that could just be my wishful thinking.

CJ, the Sam thing is not simple. There's nothing directly wrong with it right now. It even appears to be on the upswing. Yeah, the combo of having a shitty phone convo right before seeing that whole 'beautiful' thing initiated me to consider acting on this old crush. But the truth is in the past week I've had to re-notice a bunch of inherent flaws with Sam that I just don't feel like dealing with. At this point, I don't see any significant disadvantage to acting on any of the few alternative opportunities that may manifest in the near future.

Mike... just be careful. You don't want to make a mistake with Sam, you've known her for so long. You are bound to find flaws with anyone you choose to pursue a relationship with, but individual flaws strengthen relationships as long as the other person can negate the flaw. Sam's flaws may be a little different, but... I don't know what I'm trying to say. Do you still love her?
