The books rocked. The movies left out a bit too much--The Two Towers actually changed some stuff, which ticked me off to no end.
My problem is that most fantasy these days seems to be cheap Tolkien ripoffs. Either that, or some poor hack played a D&D campaign once and decided to immortalize his characters in a novel. I dunno... rpgs are fun, but they don't make the best novels. Inside jokes never translate well, for one, plus we really don't need twenty novels about Rebskwar the Elven Druid, Jekeron the Warrior/sorcerer, and Timmy the gay half-orc barbarian. They get repetitive after a while.

well theres also the special edition dvds which has tons of stuff they cut out. i didnt really like the end of The Two Towers myself cause i was expecting frodo to get captured then like at the end of the book and not at the beginning of Return of the King.Trident wrote:The books rocked. No the silmarilion has to do with the formation of Middle Earth, The elves Rebellion against the Gods, and the fight for the silimaris.Bebop0083 wrote:does the silmarilion have any thing to do with the Lord of the Ring series as well as the hobbit?? ive heard of the book but i havent heard that much detail on it. i saw a preview of the third movie. its going to rock.moonslayer wrote:I read the hoobit and I'm half way through the silmarilion. The first time I saw Fellowship of the Ring in theaters I didn't really know what to think of it, probably because of the way it ended. It looked great and was epic and all that but that was it. Then I saw it on DVD and for some reason enjoyed it a lot more and the movie just grew on me. Watching the extended special edition DVD probably helped that cause. FOTR is now in my Top 5 movies of all-time and I was inspired enough to do a music video of it. TTT was good also but I thought FOTR was much better. Anyway, ROTK is my most anticipated movie for the rest of the year.

The Silmarillion is nice because it digs into some things Tolkien alludes to in his actual novels. But yeah: as my brother put it, The Silmarillion is like a history book if Tolkien wrote history. *refrains self from drawing comparisons between it and medieval literature*
Tolkien's got a ton of other stuff too. I've got Unfinished Tales sitting on my shelf right next to <i.The Tolkien Reader, which contains a bunch of his short stories and poetry. He also either wrote or translated a version of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Perhaps the least known of his stuff is his childrens' story Roverandom, a cute little story about a dog's misadventures which kicks major booty because, although it was written before The Hobbit, it refers to various legends which Tolkien further develops in The Silmarillion.
