Oh my god.. Moonbase Commander!

Post by Garylisk » Mon Dec 30, 2002 3:18 am

Wow, I am gonna lose SO much sleep over this game! I just got it today, and it ROCKS MY GONADS!

It's for the PC, cost me a mere 15 dollars, and is more awesome than I can fucking describe. It's made by a company called "Humongous Entertainment" and the title is very humongously entertaining. It's published by Infogrames, the same people who brought us Master of Orion 1 & 2, Master of Magic, and tons upon tons of other games (Also DBZ Budokai for PS2.. nto that I care about that game :P )

Reputation aside, the game is (If you can imagine this) a cross between Scorched Earth (Old DOS based tank wars game) and Starcraft (Kind of).

Much like Scorched Earth, the main challenge of gameplay is to take aim, decide on how much power to put into your shot, and then fire. Instead of the numebr system for shot power that was used in Scorched Earth, it uses a guage. Think swing strength in a golf game, or even how far you'd toss a grenade or fire a bazooka in Worms Armageddon/World Party. Now apart from those two aspects, the way the game LOOKS is nothing like scorched earth. In fact, it's overhead view like Starcraft, and the graphics actually remind me a lot of Starcraft's graphics.

You start out with one "hub". From this hub, you can spend Energy, which you are given each turn (It's turn based), on new hubs, weapons, or units. There are different kinds of hubs, too. Energy hubs collect energy from energy pools, giving you more actions per round since your energy collection rises. There are anti-air hubs that can shoot down airborn threats from other players every other turn (Takes one turn to reload.).. There's shield hubs that create a force field around a certain radius. (These force fields can be taken out with a well placed EMP bomb though) There's a lot more hubs than that, but that's just an example.

Basically, it's a well made turn based strategy game with a lot of skill involved as far as aiming and judging distances. Very addictive, absolutely AWESOME music soundtrack, good sound effects, 4 different "races" to play (Though they only differ in appearance, not skills or building types), and you can play multiplayer over a LAN or the internet with up to 4 players.

The website is http://www.moonbasecommander.com - SO yeah.. check this frickin' game out, it ownz!

The boys over at Penny Arcade have been raving about that game, but I never really bothered to look into it. For a price tag of $15 I just might, though...

People on the slashdot forums are calling it the "sleeper hit of the year" and I would have to agree.. it's just so bad-ass :P

I never go to slashdot. I heard about what they said from my friend Billy who is the one who introduced me to the game. He goes to slashdot sometimes while he's bored at work.. god knows why :P
