Some BS: Final Fantasy using JRR Tolken for reference.

(The site goes off and on, so you might not be able to get it the first try.)

That is a site, I'm pretty sure unofficial, basically of the Final Fantasy's mythological bibliography. It says that the armor "Mithril" was invented by JRR Tolken in "fantasy world of Arda." I really think whoever this is need to get his facts straight, and that this ore was probably part of ancient mythology somewhere.

Tell me, is this a bunch of BS, or am I making myself look like a complete idiot?

Gee. Doesn't that make me feel a whole lot better. It just doesn't seem very sensible. Something as widely used as Mythril, being made up by a well known author? I don't think it's true. And I even think I remember reading something (When I was studying Norse Mythology) About Mithril being Oared to prepare for the Ragnarok. Just doesn't seem right to me. Oh and I am not a LOTR fan either, but it is not my dislike for the series that is making me say this.

....And now that I think of it, didn't they spell Mithril, "Mythrill?"

I'd have to say you're making yourself look like a complete idiot.
That's just my opinion; I could be wrong.

mithril is indeed one of the words in Tolkien's Middle-Earth, or Arda, as the Elves knew it.

It wasn't armor per se, but was rather a type of metal that we might associate with a cross between titanium and early extracted aluminum*: lighter than steel, yet far stronger, and extraordinarily valuable. IIRC, "mithril" means "moon-silver" in English (that might be wrong; it's been a while since I read the books.)

It may certainly have a lingustic relationship to "real" languages, but the most popular use of the word is in the Tolkienian manner. The OED even lists the word of Middle-Earth origin.

* Obviously, a qualitative fusion, not an actual metallurgical operation.

I hope my wording didn't throw anyone off, I know that Tolken does use Mithril in his books. And that extracted aluminum sounds interesting, I might have to look something into it.

It really isn't too terribly interesting: it's just the story of how aluminum was a PITA to extract from bauxite, and thus was, for a time, the most valuable metal on the planet.

The real interesting story is the discovery, and operation, of the modern electrolytic process for converting bauxite to aluminum metal. Well, if you're a geek, that is.

:P

(I know this is getting off topic from the whole Mithril thing but...) I did read on that Bauxite to Aluminum thing. Very interesting. Never heard of Molten electrolytes. But you learn something new every day.
