and with this the blood-man cries

Post by bloodyfang » Thu Nov 21, 2002 8:36 pm

ok i have a major problem. all the folders on my Hard drive have become read only and i can't get them out of read only.. I've tried through properties and after i uncheck read only it just becomes read only by itself.

My computer froze up last night while i was watching The Truth About Totoro and i had to pull the plug to get it to go off. But that shouldn' have messed up my computer like this?

I did a virus scan last night that came up clean so unless this is a stealthy virus that hides from virus scanners i don't know what the problem is. And a system restore from last week didn't work.

I can't run a repair from my OS disc because my mother's idiot boyfriend misplaced it.

I can't keep editing my new vid until this problem is solved

What OS are you running, and does it do it in safe mode, assuming you have Windows? Additionally, is the problem that you can write to the folder (copy and move files, shit like that), and it just has wacky attributes, or is it that you can't do anything with the folders except view the files in them?

Also, can you make new folders, and if so, does it do this with them?

OS - WinXP
Safe mode = No

I can't save any new fiels to any folders. Only to the hard drive

like C:/blah.avi

and so on.

when i make new folders they automatically become REad only and are stuck that way just like the rest of them.

and i tryed copying files to a new folder but after i restarted (updating stuff) it disappeared.

So the folders aren't wacky in safe mode? Try running MSCONFIG (Click Start, then Run, type in msconfig, and hit Enter). Choose "Selective Startup" and uncheck "Load startup group items", then click OK and confirm that you want to reboot. When you get back into Windows, try your folders. If things are operating normally, run MSCONFIG again, and click the startup tab at the top. You'll see a list of checkboxes (they should be unchecked). These are programs that start when Windows boots.

Enable the first program, click OK, reboot, and try your folders out. If things are OK, repeat until you have found the offending program.

If Windows still has the problems when you first boot up after disabling your startup items, go back into MSCONFIG and uncheck "Process System.Ini File" (leave the load startup group radio button unchecked, also), click OK, and reboot. Windows will look strange when it comes back up. Try your folders.

i meant no safe mode... or maybe i don't know how to get into safe mode in WinXP. i know how to in the Winxx OS's that's pretty easy but XP is a different story.

Tapping F8 after your computer does its power up tests should bring up the boot options menu. You can also try the MSCONFIG stuff I mentioned earlier, in normal mode, but try safe mode first. Also, AIMing me might be a better way to discuss this.
