The "Story" Category
So here's the deal. I've posted this before but apparently it didn’t fly well then.
What would it take to get "Story" a proven category?
There are people who tell stories using anime footage that are uniquely different from their original stories. Sometimes all it takes is a good song choice. Other times it takes some unique editing. Either way it has been done and is continuing to be done. I've created two AND I'm working on one right now...
These kinds of amv's are obviously original and they deserve their own category if you ask me.
Thoughts? I was hoping to get it approved before next year starts, so no one gets left out of the story category VCA's if this idea gets that far.
I guess I’ll start looking through my watched video's list and post some of the ones i thought did this. If that's what it will take.

I don't know what it'd take, but for what it's worth (zilch) you have my vote. I tried suggesting this category for the Rec thread (see "New Recommended AMVs Topic: Narrative" in Site Feedback--I listed some example vids there if you're looking). But Guy07 said no so...
I've noticed that a lot of people point out whether or not their vids have a story to them in their comments, so you'd think it's kind of already a category in people's minds. I've seen it as a category in contests too--that is, best storytelling.

I meant for both. A VCA category and a genre category. This helps people decide what they want their videos to be most acknowledged for genre wise. The Origonal Head Hunter wrote:if you mean a category in the VCAs or Recommendation forum, I'd be all for it. But for a new genre in the catalog entries, it'd be just a useless genre you could easily put it into another genre based on the story being told.
There is a flaw in your arguement. Part of what you say is true but that pretty much plays against some of the other genres. That's like saying we dont need any of the ones on the right side of the genre selections list because they all fall into the left ones some where. Don't belive me? Go click on your edit my videos link, click one of your videos, then look at the list yourself.

I agree with this. The current categories we have are really redundant and repetitive. Not only that, but a bunch of them cover the same topics.Eva-Fan wrote:There is a flaw in your arguement. Actually none of them seem pointless/redundant/repetitive to me, I wasn't trying to give off this idea with that post by pointing out the flaw of overgeneralizing AMV's... I'm trying to create another option to further diversify amv's from one another.MrDoctorDoctorGimmeDaNews wrote:I agree with this. The current categories we have are really redundant and repetitive. I always thought "Other" was there so people could specify what they were going for in the video comments in the case of it not being listed as a genre. However I think storytelling is powerful enough to be its own genre. Obviously it will have the basics somewhere in it "Drama", "Romance", "Comedy", "Action", etc... But it deserves it's own respectful spot just like "Trailer"(These are by themselves original works beyond the anime’s storyline just like the genre I'm trying to impose) or "Character Profile".

Would you characterize a bunch of crying scenes to sad music a drama? no. Would you call a bunch of scenes of people kissing a romance? A bunch of one-liners comedy? A bunch of DBZ/Naruto/Bleach fighting scenes a -... nevermind that one, but you get the point. The story makes drama dramatic, romance romantic, comedy funny. It's not just basics.Eva-Fan wrote:Obviously it will have the basics somewhere in it "Drama", "Romance", "Comedy", "Action", etc...

yes but you can categorize a sentimental as a drama. and a romance as a comedy... depending on how the video is made... etc.

The same can be said for any of the categories other then the basics yet they got their own slot as a category. Where were you when they were imposed? A video is fun because of the comedy in it is it not? A trailer is dramatic, actiony, etc because of that being in it is it not?The Origonal Head Hunter wrote:Would you characterize a bunch of crying scenes to sad music a drama? no. I'm trying to impose this category because of its uniqueness in originality just like that of a trailer.
