Help! My mac dosen't recognize .wmv!

Post by Mysticbynd » Sun Oct 12, 2008 4:29 pm

If i try to download any AMVs that are .wmv format, my mac doesn't recognize them as video. They open as scrabbled text. I've tried getting a wmv player, but that also says that the files aren't movie files. Then I thought that maybe they were compressed, but I've tried getting a "Stuffit Expander" thinking that would work... but that says that they aren't compressed either. What do I do?! Almost all the AMVs are wmv format and i cant watch them! >_<

Well, I don't have a mac myself. However, I believe that VLC player would work to play those files. You can download the vlc player here:

VLC will play just about everything.

However, do yourself a big favour and install the following:
  • Flip4Mac - a WMV quicktime component
  • XviD - XviD quicktime component
  • Perian - quicktime components for everything else
If you install these then just about everything you can find on this side (including WMV files) can be played normally on the Mac. It also means that all work fine in Front Row.

You will occasionally come across a badly packaged MP4 that won't open in Quicktime, and for that use VLC.
