Logging in...

Post by Aaron » Sun Nov 10, 2002 9:57 pm

I've had this problem for a while, but I never asked for help until now. One day, when I tried logging into the site normally under my Aaron name, it wouldn't accept my password. I thought maybe there was some technical bug that affected my account, so I tried asking for a new password.

The thing is, it only works for my forum membership, and not the actual website membership. Even after I change my password to what I want it to be, it still doesn't work like it used to. I was hoping I could receive some help because I'd really like start changing my information in the near future.

Thanks for your time. :)

Hey,

Here's what I just did to test the password reminder/change:

1. Loged out of site and forum.
2. Used the forum's "I forgot my password" procedure.
3. Got link in email, clicked it, and used provided gibberish password to log into forum.
4. Attempted to log into site with old password: failed.
5. Attempted to log into site with gibberish password: success.
6. Loged out of forum.
7. Changed password in site profile info.
8. Loged into forum with new password: success.
9. Loged out of site.
10. Loged into site with new password: success.

Did you attempt do anything similar to this above? If so, where did your attempt fail?

Phade.

I am able to do all of those steps except the last one where you log into the site. I'm guessing the password for the forum is not related to the password for logging into the site. Whenever I try to click a "lost password" link in the site log-in areas, it just takes me to the forum password retrieval. (did that make sense?)

This is just too confusing for me because I have been a member for a long time and I don't understand why my password just changed all of a sudden...

It's supposed to do that, Phade integrated the site login into the forum login, so your forum login/password is also the site login/password.

Yes, but my forum password isn't working as my site password. That's the problem I'm having...

Hey Aaron,

So you were able to log into the site with the gibberish password (steps 4 and 5) but not the one that you changed to a useful password?

The passwords were switched over to be a unified password between the site and the forum so that they are one in the same. In fact, both are pulling the information from the exact same spot.

No, I suppose I read Steps 4 and 5 wrong thinking it said the forum and not the site. I'll just clarify right now that I have not been able to log into the site at all with any password.

You say that the passwords are unified, but doesn't seem to be the case with my account...

Phade, do you think there's any possibility that you could somehow manually configure or at least reset my other password? I'm not sure what the problem is, and it seems like this hasn't happened to anyone else, so I'd like to find some sort of answer to my problem if possible.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hey,

Try this one last thing first: completely clear your browser cookies and cache and then try it. I'll look closely at the login code too.

That was the problem.

I deleted my internet cookies, and then my new password worked for the site. Thanks immensely Phade :)

I don't understand what exactly the cookies did to my attempts, but I'm sure there's an explanation. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
