Bandwidth

Phade, if it costs you so much for bandwidth, why not switch your hosting to a site that allows you to have unlimited bandwidth?

Hey,

Nobody ever has "unlimited" bandwidth; that is just a marketing ploy to get you to sign up for thier service. The major drain with this site is raw computing power (well, and bandwidth). I have had to move more often simply because this site was pulling too many resources from other sites on the same shared server. The site is now on a nice dedicated server with lots of bandwidth now. In fact, I'll probably turn on the "Video of the Week" section sometime this month. :D

Well Phade is running off a dedicated server. I am sure the site creates alot of traffic, but it probably uses WAY more CPU power then most sites.

PHP is a dynamic uhhh web development scripting language

Everytime you look at a page, respond to someone, search for a video. The server has to dynamically create the page on the fly, which takes cpu power. Multiply that by thousands of times a day, you're looking at a hefty chunk of CPU time.

So phade is probably happy with his co-located remote server with a healthy pipe. If it works, just keep it.

Hey,

Klinky is correct. The major drain on the site now is pure CPU power.

When the Golden Donut comes around, the site will need reliable bandwidth. If the "free" bandwidth is gone next month, people won't be too happy about it.

What are your server specs?

Well when you get enough donation money, if you swith over to a server with a cpu that is made specificaly to be used in servers (athalon MP or a Xeon.) that will make a big difference, in the mean time of you need a quick fix you can head over to pricewatch.com and get a stick of 512 megs of ram for about 30 bucks, its DIMM not DDR, but it can get the job done.
