How Do You Replace An Entire Link With Just A Few Words?

I'm confused on how you replace an entire link like this:

And turn it in to a few simple words with the same exact link like this:

This thread is a duplicate (or triplicate rather). Please respond to this thread which is still on the first page at the time of this posting.

Even though theres no link there now do you get what I mean?

when you go to the URL button in the "post a reply" page (rather just scroll over it) you will see [url = http://wwwhatever] URL text[/url]
the text is what appears in the post, but it takes you to the url specified in the url tag...
So pretty much what the other two people are telling you is now told a third way.
But this was there is almost no chance of you not being able to understand
