MD5 / CRC check sum to confirm upload

Post by Eek-1 » Wed Sep 14, 2005 1:57 pm

Can this be implemented?
Just so to save our time & bandwidth to fully verify our video.

MD5 sums are kept, I think, but I wonder how many people would actually take the time to generate MD5 or CRC hashes of their videos and compare, rather than going through the old way and just downloading the thing again.

I mean, we have enough questions about FTP client usage. We don't need to scare people by slapping some 32-digit hexadecimal number in there...

Currently, I do the hash before uploading and after downloading.

I would also do this as well. For several reasons:

- it's quick and easy to generate checksums
- it saves me spending another half an hour (or whatever) downloading my own video
- it save a-m-v.org the bandwidth

Although I think I proposed this in the past and it turned out the solution was infeasible as it required changing the upload process. From memory the MD5 sums were only calculated after the video had been confirmed.

You wouldnt be stupid enough to screw up an upload in the first place.

- So is using this forums search function and google :roll:

- Alot of people (thoughs on 56k and limited dl's esspecialy) dont bother downloading their own video. They just trust their ability in being able to use that brain thing alot of people seem to lack.

- The amount of bandwidth saved would be minor and insignificant at best.

The thing that asks for exact filesize isn't enough? =\

Same filesize doesn't mean same content. Or, to put it another way:

01000010b = 66
11000010b = 194

Single-bit errors can be fun, although they're the type that usually gets caught by the Internet checksum. But I digress.

I guess if people actually do hash their videos (I don't, but hey, who knew) it might be worth it, so long as it is provided solely as an alternative. The thing that keeps bugging is the (high, IMO) possibility of threads with titles like "help wot is md5" continuously popping up in Site Help and elsewhere, even after guides are created and stickied.

It doesn't have to be an input field like the file size. Just show the check sum on the page and let those who know benefit from it.
