Pointless threads?

Okay, I know this has, probably been asked before and I am just not finding it in the search engine. But tell why can't we have a special area, where people can place pointless threads, other that the fact it is against the rules?

We used to have an Off Topic section. Late in 2003, it was closed down, never to return.
Phade and the rest of the administration decided that having an off topic section was no longer furthering the mission of the forums. Oslt.

This thread should explain things adequately.

This forum used to have an off-topic section. People abused it, so it was removed. The purpose of off-topic was to keep off-topic stuff out of the main forums; when the off-topic boards were removed, this did not change the existing policy of not having off-topic stuff in the bulk of the site forums.
