Mark Video as Downloaded
I like all the features that go with having downloaded a video locally.
Infact, I like them so much, I could be inclined to download a video I already have simply to get it marked as downloaded. Especially with upcoming features like the suggestion generator.
Therefore I suggest that there be a way to flag a video as downloaded. In my case, I've been collecting stuff for a long time, and I got them directly from a creator's website, or from clubs, etc.
I think this would definatly be value added.

Re: Mark Video as Downloaded
Only problem I see with that is that I think (or at least it's on the drawing boards?) that the next (or future) VCAs will require having downloaded the nominees. I'm not sure if this idea has been developed or in any way evolved into implentation yet, though, so maybe a download flag is still feasible.quadir wrote:Therefore I suggest that there be a way to flag a video as downloaded.
Although it could also theoretically interfere with the star scale, or allow it to be abused if flagging means that you can also rate it. If not, I think it would still mess with the data (star scale or database stats) a bit because the video wasn't actually downloaded. On the plus side, if flagging means you can score a video, it could help with the suggestion query because people could flag and score videos they've seen but not downloaded. However this is assuming that people are honest when they flag a video.

One way of allowing some of the functionality without the splash damage that Flint describes is to only allow the flagging to effect the suggestion generator (and anything else that might be relevant) so that it's a purely convenience factor

True, and in this makes more sense because these videos are all recent. I don't see this as enough of a motivation to not implement this however, since there is more then the org on the internet.flint_the_dwarf wrote:VCAs will require having downloaded the nominees.
I have 2 really good examples where this would be case:flint_the_dwarf wrote:On the plus side, if flagging means you can score a video, it could help with the suggestion query because people could flag and score videos they've seen but not downloaded.
1) I have things on VHS or burnt cd, distributed at anime clubs. Infact I have over 100 videos that I have kept over the last 5 years from this method.
2) I saw a video at a con, really liked it, went online and reviewed it. It may now even be available for download! Imagine that. But nevertheless I should be able to flag it as `having seen it', or in this case, the slightly incorrect, `flag as downloaded'.
You do raise good conflict issues however, which would have to be carefully considered, like the stars and stats.
Almost the whole site is built upon trust. When I put up a video (er, when), you trust I am the one who made it. You may point out that in the rules it says I should be the one to have made it.flint_the_dwarf wrote:However this is assuming that people are honest when they flag a video.
In the rules it may one day read:
- You shall not flag videos as downloaded unless you have actually seen them
Possible problems:
- Once a `flag as downloaded', people will ask for a seperate `flag as seen'. IE, I saw this at the con, but I havent downloaded it yet.
So you're right, there's a lot more to this then originally thought, but I think it is very much worth thinking about, and at the very least discussing (hint).

I also would love this to be implemented. Donators can use the weird bug thing to start a download and then it counts as being downloaded already, so for now it's just a donator "feature", but it'd be nice if it was actually implemented in a way that there could be check boxes and a button or something, even if it remains a donator feature. *plans to donate before too much longer.. just hasn't had much cash to spare until recently*

Well, obviously, but I don't see the relevence of that statement...quadir wrote:I don't see this as enough of a motivation to not implement this however, since there is more then the org on the internet.
Yes, but as experience shows us, rules and honesty don't have much meaning for some people here.quadir wrote:Almost the whole site is built upon trust. But, yes, there is already a way to do it.

Re: Mark Video as Downloaded
Maybe that came accross harsh. What I meant to express really was that I might download the video elsewhere. Some creators have actually posted higher quality encodes on their website then on the org.quadir wrote:I don't see this as enough of a motivation to not implement this however, since there is more then the org on the internet.
I still use the org primarily though, and to manage what I have to a degree, and want to maximize the usage of it's features.
