Necessary Evils... with Ops

my friend nandez and i were discussing that there should be more than an incentive to reply to Ops

of course actually GIVING Ops is somewhat of an issue, but what about REPLYING to Ops?

we were thinking of something like the Star System has it, here's what we talked about in a nutshell

Star System - up to 10 videos can be dled without giving stars, but once you reach 10 videos, you have to give a star or you can't dl any LOCAL vids
Op System - this would be linked to the LOCAL dls, setting some sort of limit of dls you can have until you Op a video, for example, can dl up to 5 videos until you give an Op, dling LOCAL vids is restricted until at least 1 video is Oped.... maybe 10 would work better... maybe not
OR (Opinion Reply) System - this would be linked to the amount of Opinions that you recieve, once you recieve like 5 or 10 Ops, you have to reply to at least one of them or else you either can't dl a LOCAL video, or maybe you are restricted from WRITING an Op[/nutshell]

I don't think that'll work. In the vast majority of cases, you'd get people giving short, one-line opinions, which (in my view) makes the opinion system entirely useless.

If you want to implement a word count, fine: I'll throw in random junk. If you want to implement something like /.'s lameness filter, fine: I'll paste random text that has only the most tenuous link to the video itself, much like "darkman" did for a while to boost his "usefulness" rating.

No. Forcing people to reply to opinions is a <i>bad</i> idea.

Why?

In some cases, the creator may have nothing constructive to reply with. I've had this happen to me on several occasions. (On other occasions, I just don't care to reply.) I <i>could</i> just make a form letter reply, but I'd rather not. Your system would encourage that kind of behavior.

Whatever or not that's a good thing or a bad thing is up to one's sense of ethics, but personally I think it sucks.

The day ops are required is the day I start cutting and pasting ascii goats into ops until the mods remove my ability to op because of complaints.

too bad people generally don't have active morals... but i don't care much that they do... so that says something about me too

Opinions completely lose their value if they are forced. I'd prefer less opinions with more constructive comments than more opinions which are only being written because they are forced to.
