Why not use Bit torrent?

It seems to me that you are protecting your bandwidth .... but how come you dont provide Both a download service and a Bit torrent tracker client to share the bandwidths, and your downloads.... sure some times people wont be seeding, but thats what the main download is for, Why shoulder all the burden of bandwidth soly on one source.... People can share reducing the bandwidth load. Some people can't donate financially... or make pledges. I myself can't even pledge a single dime... unless I don't want to eat for a day or two. As is i am buying Ramen Noodles on my credit card..... but what I can do is share bandwidth.

If I created something as beautiful as ANY of theses AMVs... I would love for people to see my work.... this is just a suggestion to make it more accessable for everybody.

The org isn't protecting its bandwidth, really. The 2 week waiting period is to stop people from getting around their site pledges by making new accounts.

Of course, multiple accounts aren't allowed to begin with.

Hey,

That and bittorrent has sucked each time I've tried to use it. Downloading from the Donut, I can easily get >300KB/s. Of the 5 times I've used bittorrent, I've gotten ~3KB/s each time. Unless you're on dial-up and are used to the mega-slow speed, bittorrent does not seem to be a viable option for AMV hosting.

Also, BT's model doesn't scale to AMVs. Look at the top star scale; the most popular vids are downloaded maybe a hundred or two times a week. Most videos on this site are downloaded less then 10. While having the Donut as the main seed would certainly wipe out speed problems, it's bloody well fast enough already, and in nearly all cases there wouldn't be any net bandwidth reduction as there'd be only one client connected at a time.

BT has been successfully used for several multi-editor projects, but these were cases with a single very large file under high demand, the sort of application that BT was designed for. Some well-known creators have also used BT to release highly anticipated videos instead of letting their personal servers get utterly nuked in the first week or so, when demand was at its peak. However, it's not a good distribution model for the vast majority of the content on this site; medium to large files under fairly sparse demand.

If there was a new-to-AMVs-best-of pack, it might make sense to set up a torrent for that. However, protocol choice in that situation would be a distant, DISTANT second to deciding what content would go in such a release.

You must have a firewall that prevents BT from working properly or something.
I know this bittorrent thing has been discussed lots of time, and now I don't really care as the donut works fine, and as it's been said, bittorrent works fine for multi-editor projects, but if you want, maybe you should have a look at this :

When set up properly, you can go up to 150KB/s with bittorrent.
if you got 3KB each time you used it, I think the probability is high that the problem comes from your computer, not the bittorrent system.

Bittorrent really only works well when there are a large group of people getting or sharing the file. so with soo many videos it really isn't efficient at all. It just wouldn't work well with this system becuase the donut rawks :O
