An external host is a website that allows you to load files to it and then access from anywhere. Many sites like MSN Groups won't allow you to do external linking (for things like avatars) and you'll end up with the nefarious "red x". You'll also probably end up paying a fee for the use of a hosting site that allows external linking. Many sites will give you a free option (be it a trial period or whatever) but they usually have a very limited bandwith usage and pointedly favor their paying customers. As for the actual sites, I'm afraid I can't help. I uploaded my av pic to the org.
