AMV Contest Listings

Post by dokool » Fri Jan 30, 2004 8:11 pm

After viewing the search results for Anime Boston 2004 (as I have been for the past few days to see what my competition may be), I'm now of the firm opinion that the contest listings are no longer an accurate or even vaguely reliable source of information. Most of the videos are listed as being sent to a dozen or more cons - and unless your surname is Sheng, I doubt it's accurate. I'm under the impression that this is done to increase hits on videos, but it seems that most of these videos aren't even good enough to be noticed in the first place.

So, is anything going to be done to make the convention listings more accurate? Perhaps the contest coordinators should send lists of videos that *were* actually submitted to the contests, just to make things fair.

Also, you should have the option to highlight (perhaps in the manner of spoilers) conventions that you won at. This would make it easier for people who are too lazy to visit TaranT's site to find winning videos.

The pages on my site also list all contest entries - not just the winners - IF that information is made public, which frankly is not too often. More contest coordinators are providing complete data than before, but it's still a lot to ask of people who normally don't hang out here, and who basically want to drop everything once the con is over. Every once in awhile I will email one, but generally I don't bother them about it. They're busy enough as it is.

Another point is that an entry in a participation list can be made just for entering an AMV in a contest. It does not have to have won, or been a finalist, or even played onscreen. At least this was the rule last time I heard. This kind of data is virtually non-existent for any given contest. A coordinator may list the winners, or the names of the videos that were played during the show. But all the other entrants, the ones that were rejected...that's just noise.

(An exception would be Otakon which takes the trouble to play every entry that can be played in the overflow rooms.)

I agree that the quality of the participation lists ranges from so-so to plain useless. It's the primary reason I launched my own site. And it's not just the content of the lists, but the names of the contests, too (e.g. AWA has to be searched for as either "AWA" or "Anime Weekend Atlanta").

I'm sure phade and the mods are aware of the problem. It's going to take a lot of work to clean up the lists. And as long as the users are allowed to enter the data themselves, I'm really not sure what can be done to keep them accurate.

Oh, and it's probably too early to check the list for AB2K4. There are people like yours truly :) who sent a video, but who have not updated the dB entry page yet. In fact, I'd prefer not to mark it for AB2K4 until I find out that it has made it into the contest. Others may feel differently.

(Have you seen any of the AMVs that were entered in every contest evar, even the ones that happened two or three years before the video's premier date? Gotta respect anyone who takes the trouble to click every last box on the page. :P )
