Seriously though, it's when you answer a post that's been dead. In other words, if you reply to a topic that's past page 1, then you're necroposting.

Its when you reply to an old thread. What exactly defines when it becomes necroposting can vary. In some cases, if you reply to a topic that hasnt had any activity for a week, that might be considered necroposting. Extreme examples of necroposting would be searching through the archives and find a thread thats a year old, and reply to it.
