I don't think we need a whole forum dedicated to introduction posts, but I also don't really see a need for a rule saying that they aren't allowed. They aren't terribly common, and people who post them didn't read the rules anyways, so the rule was useless. After they made their introduction post and are informed of the rule, then it technically doesn't even matter, because their next post wouldn't be an introduction post anyways. Basically, the rule serves no good purpose, other than explicitly giving authority to the mods to lock such posts, but I'm pretty sure they have authority to do that with or without that specific rules existance.

Code: Select all

trythil sets mode: +b *!*@*.*
Seriously:

I don't think insta-ban is really a good idea, because it's just too easy to make mistakes.

I do think, however, that Flint's idea is a good one: make a reading of the rules mandatory. Maybe even restrict posting privileges for the first week after join.

I'd support that idea. They have a 5 day or so probation period on the Doom9 forums where you can't post after you register, and it REALLY helps to weed out the stupid posts. I mean, due to the nature of that site, you would seriously expect all sorts of idiocy happening around there, but you don't. The people who have something worth saying will wait it out, and the others will continue on their way.

However, on this site, the registration for the main website and the registration for the forum are basically the same thing... right? So you can have members who sign up, download, upload, post opinions, post software reviews, etc., and not visit the fora at all for months... and THEN come in and post some stupidity.

There is no 'need' for OT. You'd like there to be an OT forum, so you see need for one. It's not going to happen. OT is gone for good, let it go.

A better solution would be some way to force new members to read the rules, but I'm not aware of any good way to do this offhand.

when you sign up append the rules to the confirmation e-mail... state that confirming to the account activation means you read the rules...

then we can ban them if they do something against the rules :O

How about when anyone clicks the register link it takes them to a page with all the rules, then a little box at the bottom stating they've read and understood the rules which they have to check before moving to the registration page. That way anyone who didnt read the read the rules chose not to, and if they break a rule they have no excuse.

If they're gonna actually crack down on stupid shit like this, they need to start banning people who use downloaded material.
an idea with both its ups and downs. Upside is that all the goddamned annoying download videos that are 8 Mb with an 8 minute song will be eradicated from this fine institution. Downside is that 1) keeping constant maintenance on these videos would be hell on the admin, and 2) alot of people who now make really excellent AMV's started off with d/led footage. I was lucky and managed to borrow a bunch of my dad's work stuff to capture manually, but not everyone has the equiptment, or even the money.

Also, if we had instabans, you'd find yet again that many people who hold a strong position in the AMV comunity would be liable for banning as many of them at one time have broken a rule.

But as for the mandatory reading of rules before joining, i think that's a bloody excellent idea. hell, i didn't even realise there was a rules page on the site until 6 months after i joined. But you'd also have to put it on a timer, as in when the page loads to read the rules before joining, you can't proceed until say 2-5 minutes has passed, because a lot of people (myself included) when it comes to reading rules or license agreements, just skip through and click the "accept" button.

Also, when a person joins i think that perhaps there could be an automated email sent from AnimeMusicVideos.org with information and links about all the key things that admin and other members get pestered about twice daily. Links to the guide's, and software lists, etc, would really benefit a new member, and would make them feel more welcome.

That's just my 2 cents.

@Kalium.. Ill NEVAH surrender on that issue.:P I still think we need one.. every forum needs one somewhere. some of the discusion threads.. they would be better off in a OT forum. BUT the opinions of the donating are taken above non donators anyway it seems JOKE.. dont hit me. Anyway i still think it would be usefull.. with the correct modding. Oh well this thread shall soon be locked as well.
