We're not discriminating against netspeak, we're promoting understandable, mature (well, as mature as the 'Org gets, anyway) conversation. I think there's a clear difference.yuppa wrote:really who are We to discriminate against someone just because they use net speak? Don't pull that egalitarian crap out here: it's out of place. There's a significant difference between promoting freedom of choice and encouraging unintelligible discourse.yuppa wrote: really who are We to discriminate against someone just because they use net speak? The forums are meant to be a place for conversation for anyone, and that requires, among other things, adherence to a standard for written language. That standard here is contemporary, standard U.S. English. Not text-speak, net-speak, or whatever you want to call it. Deviations from this rule make communication harder than it has to be, so it is discouraged and corrected.
Non-native speakers of English have a logical exemption. Native speakers do not.
When the world begins to rite n spk lik ths 4 realz, then perhaps such discriminatory practices will be out of place. For now, though, you're just subject to the painful, repressive tyranny of the majority.

You can usually tell the difference between people who do not speak English as a native language and those that are too lazy to write out words properly. While the former is clearly understandable, the later is annoying and demeaning to our community. Those who choose the lazy way out must accept that people find their ignorance offensive and that they are (and rightly should be) though of poorly because of it -- at least in intelligent society.Michele wrote: I quote some of here. It's what I think, if who write english is NOT native of a country when it is the first language, PERFECTION can't be a *Must*, at least him/her are doing their best to create some type of contact. ALL changes when the writer first language is english, btw, first language or not, see a full CAP post with unreadable language on it trying to say probably something useless can actually put on some nerves. The same happen here in Italy, actually I never saw a so particualr "grammar nazism" anywhere, but if an Italian appear bitching an horrible spelled language.. It's not took seriously. But as far as the writer/speaker is foreign, imo here there should be not problems.
You're not far off with the lack of caring about spelling/grammar on the internet, but this is a PROBLEM that shouldn't be shrugged aside. Sure, on a forum filled with 12-year-old leet speakers, the average person (I use the term loosely) can care less about sounding coherent. But as the general level of discourse here is on a higher level (as should be evident what we do -- although with the standard fare that passes for an AMV here, that obviously isn't the case), it should not be tolerated.

The use of net speak, slang or something the like has nothing to do with freedom of choice. It's simply rude, especially, but not only, against people who aren't native English speakers. Languages have their rules and their vocabulary to have a common base of understanding. By intentionally disobeying this you express that you aren't interested in a communication which can be understood by all. For that kind of elitism should be no place at the org.
For the ones who disagree with that, think about this:"Du ju fink ju kenn andersdend it iff ei reit de inglisch lengwitsch daun leik it saunds tu mie äs Dschörmenn?"
