Viewing problems on Macintosh (OS X)

Hey guys,

I've been trying to fix this problem on my own and with the help of friends for a while now (actually before I even joined this site), but I think it's got me beat... so I'm wondering if anyone here has a hint.

I'm using an eMac running OS 10.3.5 with the standard players -- RealPlayer, QuickTime, and Windows Media Player. I've downloaded DivX 5.1.1 as well. About half the movies I download play just fine, but the other half play without video. The main suggestion I've gotten from friends and found here is to download the Gordian Knot Codec Pack from doom9.org, but unfortunately, that seems to be PC only. So does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this for my Macintosh? It's getting so annoying to have to assign random star ratings to people because I can't view their videos...

I've been using VLC to watch videos on my PowerBook (also 10.3.5) . That's been the only way I've gotten almost anything encoded with XviD to play the video.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me... whenever I try to play one of the videos I couldn't play elsewhere, I get the error message "main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format." Which, naturally, made me notice that all the files I hadn't been able to play (at least that I came upon during testing) were .wmv. Is that a type you can play with VLC, or have you just written them off as incompatible?

Shouldn't Microsoft's website have the WMV codecs you need to fix that? Or do they not have them available for Mac...?

Well, gee, Scintilla, of course it... *...checks the Microsoft website, just to be sure, and winds up downloading version 9 as compared to my version 7, which works perfectly* ...does. *sweatdrops* Um, right. Well! Thank you for that advice, and sorry about wasting all of your time like this. I'd heard so much stuff about codecs and so forth that I'd forgotten entirely just to check for a simple update (of course, I hadn't noticed until yesterday that I was just having problems with .wmvs, but still). Talk about missing what's right under your nose. So thanks again for both of your suggestions, and sorry I was such a ditz!
