Actually you can only increase the intensity of the compression algorithm that png uses. Png is lossless compression (Sorta like HuffYUV) so it wouldn't make sense to remove colors.Zarxrax wrote:In png, you increase the compression level by reducing the number of colors used.
I think you may be refering to gif which uses a palette of colors which can be defined.
Well.... since it appears we will be posting our thoughts here I guess I'll post this:

I recommend 1 image per post (56k friendly)
png is a lossless compression format which would be rather large for screencaps. It is best used for encoding screencaps that need to be lossless for comparisons (i.e. something that would be posted in the general video forums).
file types shouldn't really matter anyways as long as the files themselves are a 'reasonable size'
If an image filesize is larger than what the forum administration requires, or the image resolution is way to big (wallpapers for example) then it should simply be linked to.
25KB is pretty small for a 640 by 480 image unless it is pretty lossy.. A cap of somewhere between 60 - 100KB sounds reasonable.
640 by 480 sounds alright since a lot of anime is presented at that resolution however it would cause the forum tables to stretch. (Not sure if this is an issue for this 'to be' forum) To prevent stretching the image width should not be larger than 600 pixels.
All of these except the last two are basically how they run things at the http://shoujo-aiheavens.com/index.php forums. It is an entire forum dedicated to shoujo-ai images. Clara (the owner of the forum) is on a 56k so I imagine that these rules would be reasonable.
