save movie file
I'd tell you where to go from there, but of course Movie Maker just froze on me. Should be pretty self-explanatory though (don't choose DV-AVI. It's huge.).

Save in DV-AVI
That way you can convert that file from an annoying Windows Monopoly File into a DivX AVI.
Yeah, they can be a bit spacey, but I think its worth it.
If you want to get a DivX file out of your Windows Thingy File, PM me or repost here or Email, whatever.

And to second what Nekoboy Sal said, DO choose DV AVI, and compress it to something smaller with VirtualDubMod. It's all explained in the page I linked to.

Oh, I just had trouble getting Virtualdub to open it, so I gave up on DV-AVI and compressed it with the "high-quality video - large" option.
It does have the advantages that Nekoboy and Scintilla said, it's just my method is more laziness-friendly. 8)

Did you try using AVISynth to import to VDub? If you do it would be a colourspace conversion if I'm not mistaken.bubblehead wrote:Oh, I just had trouble getting Virtualdub to open it.
DV is RGB and then AVISynth defaults to YUV2?
I could be wrong on both accounts. To lazy to check. Also, I didn't visit that link up there. I wonder where it goes?

AVISynth will open your file in whatever colorspace it's in. No conversions have to take place unless you have a filter that needs a specific colorspace (like Deen needs YV12), or until you compress to a codec that uses a different colorspace than your source.
By the way, we find here that DV is actually 4:1:1 YUV, not RGB.
If you serve up your DV AVI file with the AVISynth command DirectShowSource("C:\mypath\myvideo.avi",fps=29.97) (I believe this works but have never had to do it myself), then use VirtualDub's Fast Recompress setting to compress to DivX/XviD, you won't be making any unnecessary colorspace conversions.
