Is the web bug on the login page necessary?

I ask because over the last few weeks I have noticed the TheCounter.com has been taking longer and longer to respond – delaying page completion.

I realise I am griping here (after all what's another 30s-45s in the grand scheme of things), but a simple counter is pretty straight forward – and the page is in PHP...
