No, you can join just to be a fan.
Joining (and either donating or waiting two weeks) gets you access to the Golden Donut, a hyper-mega-fast server that hosts AMVs locally. Since everyone is putting their videos on the Donut, it's probably a good idea to get an account.
GD downloads are tagged "Local" as opposed to Direct or Indirect.

You mean, if you want to host an AMV of your own?
"Direct" means that you're hosting it on another site, and the link takes you directly to the video.
"Indirect" means that you're hosting it on another site, and the link takes you to that site, but not necessarily to that video. Mostly used to redirect people to studio websites, etc.
And this should be in "Site Help."

You need to have paid hosting, otherwise you're not going to have much luck.
This is why the Golden Donut is such a good thing, because it allows *anybody* to host their videos on a fast server. If you're new at AMV-making, I'd suggest taking full advantage of the Donut (without abusing the rules, which you should READ, unlike the dozens and dozens of newbies who don't), and use it to host your videos.

You'll see when you become more used to the community that removing this 2 week thing would be a bad thing.
People would leech the server, the bandwidth would die, and the Golden Donut would disappear...
+ other disadvantages...
you don't want that
