What's the reasoning behind putting everything into one CSS file?

Once your browser has it, it should be cached and not re-downloaded unless there is a change in filesize. This way, as you browse the site, you already have the styling information and you only download the actual content.

Before we switched from tables to css, the main members page was around 140KB not including images. Now it is around 30KB. (30 + 70.5 the first time the browser grabs the CSS.)

Some of the stylesheet is redundant and could probably be trimmed down, but I doubt that will happen any time soon...
