The post count, as I see it, is simply a matter of curiosity. Sometimes you might wonder how many posts you have, and it's right there. At first, it wasn't harmful and really a convenience in a way. But now, people have for some reason used the post count to create a sort of title for themselves.
I kind of like it now, it's interesting to look around a bit. For instance, people that used to have upwards of 2000 posts now have a number in the lower hundreds. Whereas AD still has over 800. What's the significance there? Simple. Almost all of AD's posts have been retained because only the ones in the off topic forums were deleted. Mine was nearly cut in half, but I don't mind. So it kind of points out exactly who wasted their lives in the off topic forums and seperated them from those who posted in the general and help forums. But my interest in that is now faded, and I can see a definate seperation if some crazy person wants to abuse it.
So... I think I agree with you Chaos. Yeah.

Post subjects are a waste of time.
The old phorum negates any argument of 'no post count = no interest'.

I've seen this happen before as well, and that alone is enough reason to axe the post counts. And even outside of things like that happening post counts still serve no real purpose; it's half the reason the OT forums got like they were.Kusoyaro wrote:I watched some AMV vets that I respect very much get completely blown off because of their low post counts, and i see a lot of idiots receiving respect because they've managed to spam beyond all possible reason.
Wait, I take that back. Post counts were good for one thing: A good laugh after watching spammer's counts go from 1000+ down to the 200s after the WOT was nuked.
Everyone is not the same as you.
Get over it.
And lighten up.

more like 4000+ down to 400.
(not me though)
I could care less about the post counts people. Let's ditch it, let's keep it, it doesn't matter to me nor should it matter to anyone else. Some people brought up serious points about membership abuse (i.e. kusoyaro about people pretending to be someone else) but you all need to quit whining about stupid little stuff. Some of the people here are the kind that can't leave well enough alone, if it's not one thing it's going to be another and post count is an irrelevant and stupid thing to complain about.
Oh yeah and if people aren't smart enough to take advice seriously due to the person giving it not having a high post count, then they don't deserve that persons help. And whoever thinks people were spamming to increase their post count was wrong, only one person did that and they did it to make a point about the one word threads.
Please, I don't want anyone to take what I have said as a personal affront but c'mon, move one people, you have better things to discuss than why post count is stupid/not stupid. I'll see you in the AMV and hardware/software discussion areas.

I don't think that's true. And I think it is a nice catalogue, it also tells us how active some members are around here or otherwise which I don't use for anything I just like th know out of curiosity. I haven't seen anybody discriminated aginst due to post count. Some of hte most valuble members have almost zero posts while some of the lesser valuable have high and vice versa.

Pits, wolf_hunter beat me to the suggestion :p
I think just having the post count available in the profiles would be an excellent compromise- it's available if you want to know how many you've got/made, and if someone really wants to know how active you've been, they can find it there. However, with it no longer being right under your avatar, people would (I hope) be much less likely to make quick judgements based on your post count and judge your post on its content.
