Upgrading server OS, downtime required

Post by Corran » Fri Aug 21, 2015 1:34 am

Hi Everyone,

Before I get to the point of this post, I’d first like to apologize to those that have previously volunteered to help get the Org to a better place back in May. Phade’s call to action, while appreciated, was not very well coordinated with those currently performing work on the website and we were not ready for the help. As a result, people have been left hanging, wondering if things were really changing for the better. We are honestly still not ready for your help, but we have been busy making changes to get us to the point where everyone who wants to help can participate.

Some of the changes we have been working on require versions of server software that we are not yet using. While we are able to make progress on code using test machines, we cannot integrate the new changes into the website until this software has been upgraded. The original plan was to wait for the new server hardware to be purchased, installed in the data center, and setup with the latest and greatest OS and programs. As noted by Phade recently however, not only is the server being replaced, it is potentially getting moved to another data center entirely. Phade’s search of a new home for the server will take time, and we don’t want to remain blocked in our other efforts in the meantime. As a result, we have decided to perform in-place upgrades of the Org’s software.

Performing an in-place upgrade means that we will need to take the website down for a maintenance period. The first downtime will occur this weekend at approx. Sunday, August 23, 2015 at 7:00:00 AM UTC (3 AM EST/Midnight PST). The downtime could be anywhere from 3-10 hours depending on how things go. We will likely have additional maintenance after this which will probably occur the following weekend. If we require the additional maintenance periods we will send out details as needed. This has been done.

This work will pave the way for future changes. Many of these should be largely invisible (hopefully) such as necessary changes to authentication and underlying code. Others will be more visible. We will send out further information about these changes as things progress. If you have already volunteered in the thread requesting volunteers, then please know that we acknowledge your desire to help, and that we will be in touch with you when we have gotten the site to a state where others can help.

Thank you for your patience.

Everything should be back up and working at this point. :) If you notice any issues, please let us know. We will be scheduling downtime again tentatively for next weekend. We will send out more info later into the week with details.

Unfortunately, due to illness, the upgrade last weekend was postponed. In the meantime, we will be updating the site login system sometime this week, potentially today. No issues are expected, but if you find yourself having difficulty logging in after this happens, first try to login via the forum as any problems that do occur would likely be encountered outside the forum. From there, go to the Site Help and Feedback forum to post the issues you've found.

Please send email if you can not log in at either location. See this thread for contact info: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/v ... 4&t=100721

The login system has been updated. Please refer to my previous post for what to do if you encounter issues.

We are performing another maintenance at 3am EDT. The website and forums will be down until the maintenance is completed. Again, if you have any issues getting into the site after we give the "all clear" on Facebook or Twitter, please let us know at admin@animemusicvideos.org .

Seems like it started swallowing opinions. Sometimes it takes them sometimes it doesn't.

Hi M'o'l. Do you recall under what circumstances it appeared to fail and when it appeared to work? In order to fix we will need to be able to reproduce the error.
