h.264 (or x264) - Should I start encoding in this format?

I've been planning on making a guide for encoding with MeGUI-x264 so that the resultant videos can play on practically any [Windows] setup from the last 4 or 5 years, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Especially since I'm sure there are things I could do to make the encodes better, but it does work the way it stands right now.
I did manage to create a MeGUI custom profile to contain the settings, but since it got upgraded to .NET 2.0, not all of them set correctly, so I need to redo it.
My reasoning for doing this in the first place is because my computer is terrible at playing most AVC encodes that are coming out nowadays from fansub groups or whatnot, and it seems that only Quicktime-encoded AVC works on mine at higher bitrates (like p0d's The Last Chapter, for instance, worked fine on my computer, but Z3r01's video(s) lag and sputter like hell). This is because of the use of the more advanced features that Quicktime doesn't use, but there are ways of using those features and still getting them to work fine on a computer as weak as mine is (by today's standards), because I've done it before. And the great part about it is that the quality is much better than XviD at that bitrate without nearly as much filtering, either.

Sounds intresting, I cannot wait for you to write it. I have been playing around with this thing tho. Just experimenting with this thing. :P
I forgot to mention that I do have an encoder for this, and its that thing you are talking about.

This is useful pre-reading material. Actually, it's basically required. Look for x264encopts.trythil wrote:Also see: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/me ... -x264.htmlInuyasha the 3rd wrote:Qyot27,

If they're not on a Windows machine, it can be assumed that they know what they're doing.

If you're interested, I say give it a try at least. You sound a bit more knowledgable than I was, so you'll likely have an easier time of it. I tried it for my last video and (after two days of
) I managed to pull off a rather nice encode. So if someone like me, who learned everything they know about encoding from EADFAG and one wikipedia article, can figure it out, I'm sure you can. While I'm a fast learner, I also only have a rudimentary understanding of these things. As far as I know, if you can actually understand what it is you're doing in XviD, you can figure this out.

If its for a music video, it doesn't really matter.
The H.264 codec was mainly made to deliver higher quality streaming videos and maintain the low filesize. Unless you just want to make it easier on the download time it shouldn't matter. I video blog, and the H.264 is amazing for the streaming video.

Empirical evidence suggests that H.264 compresses better than XviD non-streaming as well.Hauntedcow wrote:The H.264 codec was mainly made to deliver higher quality streaming videos and maintain the low filesize.
