now i've got an even bigger problem. I'll add the zoom effect and add points of the effect(you know to adjust how far it zooms in or out) but then no matter what i click on it will no changed to where i can move each point. it just trys to move the video itself. This happens with other things as well.

what are you talking about. you can't put alpha on a track with no video like that, at least mine can't.

an alpha channel is basically a video track that you can make into an alpha channel. Just place your top and bottom tracks as shown and place either a black and white still image or video clip between the two, change this to an alpha channel and presto, you got yourself an alpha channel mask layer.

whee!

oh. I see what you are saying.

but how does this make a transition? or does it? that's what confused me about the book.

okay, say you have a video clip that starts out white, and then fades to black. If you take this and make it into an alpha channel between two other videos, as the time marker passes over the alpha channel, where it's white, it shows the top video, and as it slowy turns to grey, it lets in half the top video and half the bottom video, and as it progresses to black, it masks out the top video and just shows the bottom vid.

this is an over-simplification, but you get the gist.

here's an experiment to show you what I mean:
1. create 2 still images; one black and one white.
2. place them on your time line making each say 7 seconds long and then overlay the black onto the white clip by 2 seconds. This will produce a 10 second transition.
3. export this clip as an AVI file and then open a new project
4. put a video clip at the top, your newly created black to white video clip in the middle, and a third video clip at the bottom. Make sure that the top and bottom videos overlap their ends over the middle part of the black to grey video so you can see the effect.
5. change the black to white video clip to an alpha channel and then play the video. It should show the top video, then slowly fade it out while fading in the bottom video as it hits the location of the alpha channel and the gray area of it.

this is the simplest way to do it - you can do really complicated effects, but try this one first.

If you mean put an alph effect on the new black white image, it doesn work. All i get is the two videos playing with no blend at all.

Code: Select all

v i d e o l i n e 1
     a l p h a c h a n n e l
                   v i d e o l i n e 2
do you have them stacked like the example above - with the overlapping and such? are you sure you made your black to white video into an alpha channel (I believe that it's found in the 'video effects' pull-down when you right click on the video link)?

it should work if 2004 is the same as MEP-10...

hope this helps

sorry, doublepost

if that doesn't work, take a snapshot of your opened video editor with the timeline showing and the video clips on the timeline.

that way we can look at it and see if there's anything wrong.
