You can't open a wmm project file in anything but wmm. If you're using version 1.0, you can open the project in version 2.0 (not the other way around), but it's only readable in some version of windows movie maker.
Did you do something to the project or the video clip files? It shouldn't be freezing constantly now if it wasn't before. Try leaving it alone for a while and defrag your computer. Restarting the comp can't hurt, either. If you didn't change any of the video clips, it's a memory problem causing the program to freeze up.
If you decide to use wmm in the future, check the guides (linked on the member main page) on how to rip dvd footage. Chances are good it's that strange program you used to get the footage - using xvid or a similar codec will cause problems and crashes with most editing programs, not just wmm. It would suck to give up here and repeat the same mistakes in a different editing program. Dvddecryptor, avisynth, virtualdub - the guides walk you through ripping dvd footage.
Yet another weird windows movie maker moment.

Well, defragmenting did not help. I guees now I'm done asking for help on this. It seems all too hopeless. Anybody reading this who uses WMM, stop using it. Just go out and buy a good program. WMM is probally the worst ever. I must admit that I'm proud of the videos I've made on WMM, but it's time to move on.
