WMV to DV Avi... then Desynch

A friend of mine is using windows movie maker, and followed AD's guide for exporting to Dv Avi.
However, once she opens the video in VirtualDub (don't know if she uses the panasonic codec or AviSynth) and tries to compress it, she gets synch problems.

I saw Scintilla mentionned this problem several times in other threads, but I'd like to know what are the possible causes for this problem, and the solutions...

(I wasn't able to find any thread dealing with this exact problem)

i dont really know myself why i chose to at that time, but the format has the advantages of helping with clarity of presentation, and suggesting future investigations. maybe i was just bored of the technical guide format.
