Chances are you're editing with Divx clips
which Premiere doesn't like too much.

Convert them to HuffYUV encoded AVI files, and Premiere should handle them fine.

Premiere does not like using footage from .avi files encoded with DivX or Xvid. This is due to the way these codecs compress the footage. If your .avi file uses one of these codecs then it is most likely your problem.

The best codec to use in Premiere is one that is lossless such as "Huffyuv 2.1.1". However because it is a lossless codec it does not compress as much meaning larger file sizes (a lot larger in some cases).

If you have an .avi file encoded with DivX or Xvid you can always just re-encode it with Huffyuv in "VirtualDub". The file size will be larger but it should run in Premiere without a problem.

Hope this helps :)
