Ripping without DeCSS (NGE) ^^

Post by Aetherfukz » Tue Nov 19, 2002 11:25 am

Wow! I'm just ripping the second Evangelion DVD (I didn't start with the first one ^^) and I have just noticed that there isn't a CSS key on the disc. Weird, cause I never saw a DVD without CSS. But hey, my DVD-ROM is ripping the thing with 10x speed, where when there is DeCSS needed, it's only 2x speed.

Well, I just thought to mention this, because I have never seen it before.

Hmm... strange, seems to be just the second disc. Now ripping the third one, and it sure has CSS keys...

ADV not using CSS?

Post by Ashyukun » Tue Nov 19, 2002 12:52 pm

I noticed the same thing on my BGC 2040 discs- SmartRipper says it didn't find any encryption and proceeds to rip the data at full speed (which admittedly sucks, because my DVD-ROM is ancient). Given both series were released by ADV, maybe they just aren't bothering with the CSS on their releases. Can't say this would wholly surprise me, especially given Eva, since there are already countless fansubs available.

Yep. I've ripped up to the 5th DVD now, and just the second had no CSS. Maybe they just forgot..! And I was so happy ripping with full speed :?

There's nothing that says that a DVD has to be encrypted. ADV stated at AWA 2001 (I think that's where it was, anyway) that they refuse to use CSS, if their licensors will let them.

Probably what happened is the earlier Authoring house wasn't using CSS. The first and second discs were both done by a different authoring house before ADV changed to their current authoring house. Disc 1 was later remastered, so disc 2 is the only one that remains from the first authoring house. That is likely why it has no CSS while the others do.

There are various anime discs which don't have CSS. For example, the first Magic Knight Rayearth boxset didn't have them, as well as several other Media Blasters discs.

What is DSS, and how do you benefit from not having CSS on a DVD when ripping it? (I'm stupid when it comes to DVD ripping terms)

http://sanyolaserproducts.com/dvd/glossary.htm
CSS:
Content scrambling system, a type of Digital copy protection sanctioned by the DVD Forum.

I makes encoding slower since you have to decrypt the data first rather then just being able to copy it.
