DVD capture methods?

I'm currently playing the dvd in a player, and using fraps to capture. This result in a lot of headaches (occassional frame loss, random stuttering, etc). Is there a software that functions similarly to VirtualDub that allows for precise capturing with minimal quality loss... and can read straight off a DVD?
