Noobs are everywhere
I am setting up a PC for doing a little AMV making, and I am now down to choosing a capture card. However, I am having trouble finding websites with feature set comparisons etc.. Or at least lists for cards that would be decent for general home use, nothin professional but maybe burn a few dvds of home movies/family stuff.

are you using a desktop or laptop?
after that...is there any specific reason why you need a capture card?
if you just want to make amvs...chances are that you just need a dvd drive and a dvd to get footage from.
a capture card would come in handy if you wanted to use VHS tapes...or wanted to watch tv on your computer, or wanted to turn VHS tapes into dvds (but then you'd need a dvd burner too)
but if you have the home movies on a video camera...you'd probably be able to import the footage into most editing programs (via usb or firewire) directly

You forgot video game catpures. Those are still done with capture cards when you're working with some systems. Actually, it's the only logical reason they'd still be useful in this hobby.Kariudo wrote: after that...is there any specific reason why you need a capture card?

I actually do stillhave a use for using a capture card. My camcorder uses DV tapes and I have no fire wire on my current tower. I also have lots of anime on VHS that I do not plan to replace with DVD's.
I also am planning on getting a super drive. burn/read everything.
I do already own an ATI all-in-wonder agp card but that thing has all the copy protection stuff that makes caputuring from VHS or other composite/s-video connections a pain.

There is a patch or tools that can disable/remove the Macrovision copy protection from TV Wonders, but I'm not sure if its ok to link to it. A simple Google search should yield results though. Also I think all capture cards are required to have this, but I really don't know for sure.
I've only used an ATI TV Wonder VE, ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0, and now my ATI X850Pro with VIVO. I found the results acceptable and after a little filtering through AviSynth. But once I used DVDs, I'll never turn back. I mainly use my capture cards to capture old family VHS tapes to make them DVDs.
Here is a site that has a huge database of capture cards along with user reviews. I'd give this a browse:
