Do you have to have a video card?

Post by Sesshomaruobsessed » Mon Nov 28, 2005 4:43 pm

I am new to AMV. I enjoy many videos made by others, but I also have my own ideas about making my own video. The only problem is that I have no idea where to begin. Do you have to have a video card to make an AMV? If so what is the best one to get and where can I get it? I have searched the internet and explored some features that are already on my computer. I am afraid that I might already have the software to create an AMV and I just wanted to make sure before purchasing a video card. Thanks for your time,

pretty much all you need to be able to do with your computer is watch dvd's on it.
I am fairly sure that you don't need anything other than your default/integrated video card.

As for the software, unless you have done any other video editing I doubt you already have the software that you need. (even editing programs)
Good news is that you can find everything you need for free.
check out the how-to-guides for more details (look at ErMAc and Absolute Destiny's guide to all things video and audio mk.2, and a couple more for good measure)

You make that sound like a bad thing... But what programs do you have that you think you can use?

Also, Kariudo's right, you don't need a special graphics card for editing 2D videos. You will need to get video clips from whatever anime you want to use so you can edit them. So, again, read up on some of the guides.

Well, if you can see animation, then you have a video card. If you are using a PC, then just search for windows movie maker under the start-search-for files and folders

You don't, but you'll appreciate graphics processing horsepower. More and more applications are starting to experiment with moving computationally expensive processes onto GPUs.

Additionally, higher-end video cards tend to have quite fast 2D, and some bundle features to accelerate video playback.

I'll just tell you this, my PC was running on basic video software, no video card and it really sucked but i could still do what i wanted. Untill I got a higher end video editing software then i had to upgrade to a graphics card, not a good one but i still needed to put one in. ATI Raidon saphire 9250 is what i'm running now and it works pritty good, so you dont really have to have the top of the line software to make AMVs

Watch an amv on a comp with some dodgy old onboard video (not new laptops, there video chips are pretty spiffy these days). You'l imediatly notice video quality, as videocards (anything from the radeon 96XX series or above) do some fancy processing on video to make them sharper and clearer.
