More RAM make a tiny or large difference in editing?

Post by Castor Troy » Sat Jul 16, 2005 11:12 pm

Ok, my ancient 4 year old computer is still running on 512 MB RAM. It should obviously be a no brainer that more RAM will result in less lag and stuff. I constantly always have Photoshop and premiere open when I edit and now the latest Photoshop CS2 tends to lag my comp far more than the original Photoshop CS.

For anyone with 1GB of ram or more, does it make a super huge difference in editing or a tiny one? I know adobe product crashing is inevitable but I'm getting sick of the constant lag. I'll even consider getting up to 2-3GB of ram if I have to.

Thanks!

If you're an AE whore, it makes a large difference. Otherwise, a CPU upgrade is better.

AMD Athlon XP 1.5 ghz sadly...

I might probably do the whole RAM+Motherboard+processor upgrade which will cost me quite a bit...

While upgrading to a gig would almost certainly help, I hesitate to recommend that you do so on your current system, due to it's age. Without more info, it's hard to know if your current board would support the proper voltages and layout, even if you wanted to buy some newer, faster RAM and use it at slower speed until doing a proc & mobo upgrade.

Your best bet is probably to save up and replace all 3 at once.

I feel for you; i'm on the other side of the spectrum though... p4 2.4Ghz but with only 256MB of RAM an di know i can only support up to 1GB total... This is seriously making a case for me to use a server MB on my next comp... 8-16GB of RAM and an AMD 64x2 (if not 2) yay!!!

Suggestion: If you strictly edit more than games, stick to Intel.

I won't need to get into why here, just trust me on this one.

Intel sux, AMD ownage. If any of u tried AMD FX or 64 socket 939, man u can tell any intel except the Extremeedition can compete with this monster.

Stop it, you're giving us AMD fans a bad name.

Let the tech news websites handle the comparisons. :?
