Macrovision think they have cracked the problem of DVD piracy with the launch of their new RipGuard protection. They claim 97 percent of the DVD copying/ripping software on the market will no longer work once the software is put on upcoming DVDs.
Unlike other attempts at protection, Macrovision say the RipGuard code will not affect the picture or sound quality of the DVD and it should remain playable in the vast majority of DVD players.
Hollywood needs something like this as DVD copying costs the movie industry $1 billion dollars a year in lost revenue. Just how they come to this figure is anyones guess of course.
Steve Weinstein of Macrovision said, "Macrovision RipGuard DVD is designed to dramatically reduce DVD ripping" - after all, there is no such thing as a perfect protection system.
