Dumb Question I can't figure out: Serial...
Now, I have a DRU-500AX DVD-+RW drive and I need to get it repaired, but I can't seem to find my serial number in the manual, the quick start guide, etc...! Where is it usually located?

Well, on my CD-RW and DVD-Rom they are located ON the drive. Meaning you'd have to open your computer up and unscrew your drive. You can usually just pull it out and read the serial number off, but if that doesn't work then you'd have to unhook it.

the Sony DRU-500AX drive is pretty new still, and should still be covered by a manufacturer's warranty. Also, this is one of the best drives on the market, since it will burn pretty much any format except DVD-RAM. The newer model, the DRU-510A is selling for about $300, and is well worth it.TaranT wrote:Add up the total cost to you for the repair. I've seen 4X DVD writers selling for under $150. It may be cheaper (or close enough) to just replace it.

Googlegear has the 510A for $250. The (Sony) DWU10 is only $170.
Also, the 510A has a known bug. See this thread:
