Advice sought on video capture card purchase!

Post by squashai » Fri Aug 22, 2003 9:36 pm

I'm pretty much new here, but I'm looking to get into digital video editing, and need a video capture card first.
I read the guide to making AMV's and I went to PriceWatch and found the following item:

http://galaxy3000.com/Itemdesc.asp?Cart ... %2FTVR&Tp=

Basically, I would like to know if that is sufficient for most forms of video capture, or if I really need to move up to a more expensive card.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Never used one of those.

Most people I talk to here are fans of the DVx00 series. The 500 kicks much ass, but personally I'm quite satiated with my All in Wonder DV. DVI output rulz, and when I can finally afford my Sony HiDef Disply I can get a share box and link to a TV. Besides, for raw power I run a 9700 Dual Monitor card (one port used thus far) and all seems to work fine with my set up. I have ripped from LD, VHS, Standalone DVD, BetaMax and cable with above excellent results.

What I meant, was:

Based on the speficications, do you think that it would be sufficient for video capture?

Just judging by cost I would say no. I have found through personal experience that cheep Video perifs are just that. Cheep. If you want a good remote go with the ATI Remote Wonder. Kicks ass when you can navigate you MP3 list form your bed... and the Computer's in the living room. As for Capture, like I said above. DVx00 products Rock! ATI are pretty good too, but if you already have a gaming card (as most do), just get a standalone capture device. Hell even the Dazzle does pretty well on my neighbors machine.

Thanks for your insight. I'm probably gonna try it out, just because I cant afford not to. But I will also look into those other options.

Thanks again.

I am now looking into getting a ATI TV WONDER, and I'm not sure whether to get a VE or PRO version. What are the major differences?
Which do you reccomend?

Thanks again.

I wouldn't reccomend an ATI TV wonder. I have one, it's not that great for capturing. The Bt878 drivers are sort of messed up and don't allow high resolutuon capturing. There are however hacked drivers.

I just rarely use the thing for capturing. I have used it for watching TV quite a bit and it works good for that.

If you want good video capture you'd want a Hauppauage WinTV401 card. Most everyone out there likes this one. It runs about $80.

There are also some Firewire DV capture devices which I heard are pretty Ok.

Main question is really, what are you going to use this for? Do you have a camcorder? Are you going to be doing alot of editing of home videos. A capture card is needed for that. If all you want to do is make AMVs, you need a DVD drive and some DVDs. You can use VHS anime tapes as well a capture card but that way of doing things is slowly dying out. Analog capturing is a bit more of a hassle than using DVDs and it provides lesser video quality. But some still prefer it ;).

So it's up to you really.

Hmm...

I only have a direct-to-vhs camcorder, so I was planning to use the card to make home movie compilations as well as make AMVs. I wanted to be able to record TV, 'cause, who doesn't think that's totally cool?

The reason I was fixated on the ATI TV Wonder, was because of it's pretty low cost. (I really can't get a hold on a lot of money like most of these people with, *gasp*, jobs...) I found this one in another thread, and since the guy said it's pretty good I'm leaning toward it now...

Unless you have any obvious reasons why it isn't a good idea, I'm seriously considering buying it.

Me, and my extremely limited income, bid you goodnight.

TV wonder is wrong. It's ok if you don't intend to EVER use the outside Media Player. The Quality is quite low, and the filetype..... well, I haven't found a program yet to play it's files. And MainActor plays most anything. As a general rule anythign under under $100 inherently sucks.
