"Mistakes" is such a broad word, but what I was referring to are missed branches. You can't tell if those are occurring or not as such a high-level. I could tell you if I could get on a simulator and well "ran" Preimiere on it with standard ops that it would send. That isn't feasible though.

It is feasible to say that I imagine Adobe products have mispredicted branches and those will be insanely slow (in CPU terms) with all the squashing and redirecting.

Also the P4's WERE better for editing, but A) I thought we were recommending a Pentium-Mobile and B) THat was the past. Last articles I read (given this was a good two months ago), AMD had the undisputed crown in everything except....mp3 encoding? It was a big deal since we beat them in everything and for a cheaper processor.

Given I am talking about something like say the FX-55 which we are not discussing, but I'm *pretty sure* we have the performance crown *at the moment*. Honestly it changes a lot so I wouldn't be surprised if they retook.

Just wait till our dualcores? :P

Also a big reason for my argument (other than my obvious bias) is compatibility and looking forward. With Athlon-64's, you get 64-bits NOW and won't have to upgrade in a few years just to run your 64-bit applications. I'd rather have that even if the P4's were better by a small margin.

I mean it doesn't matter how fast you run things if you can't run it due to incompatibilities right?

An IBM consortium is claiming quad's or better later this year:

Cell is understood to have at least four cores and be significantly faster than Intel and AMD chips.
Don't know if this Cell is PC-compatible, but they say it will be in the PS3 in 2006.

The rest of the article is here.

Well it's no real surprise. There's actually a "chip" with like 8+ processors on it IIRC. At the same time, IBM is an awesome company, but the x86 market is between two companies, AMD and Intel and both of us launch our dual-cores this year.

I imagine going to quad wouldn't be that much of a step up, but I can't say more beyond that...:-?

As you alluded to, the Cell Processor is *not* PC compatible. It's a processor for things like well...the PS3. I wouldn't be surprised if such technology migrated into other markets, but you gotta realize industry is hard to change and slow if it does. I imagine we'll be stuck with x86 for a little while longer...

Even without the x86 compatibility, it's a good bet that it will show up in some PC-based video cards. Not a big deal for editing, but gamers might be interested.

Good point.

You gotta remember, I'm obviously quite narrow-minded when it comes to technology. I just think of processors

In fact, I only get a video card when I *have to* (i.e. a game won't work anymore). Sadly that time is now...

Woe is my Geforce 4200 TI

Man, that card is great! Don't get too caught up in the race, and stick with it for a bit longer. That's what I suggested to my brother, a 4200 TI user of 2 years. By and large, it still runs virtually any kind of game you throw at it, and quite well mind you.

That card still has at least few months in it :)

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Well I've had it for nearly 3 years and it's gotten to the point where I *can't* play some games on it which is when I usually upgrade. This time around it was Half-Life 2. Surprisingly Doom III was fine, but not Half-Life. I've had the game for two months even : /.

That's precious...cute even ;).

Nah, I don't have nice things to say about VIA, but Transmeta makes some cool stuff. Namely a processor that runs under 1 Ghz, but still performs admirably and consumes very little power. I seem to recall seeing a "laptop" that wasn't even a foot wide and weighed like 3 lbs.

I'm pretty sure Transmeta or rather one of their design teams is in Austin, but I've never bothered to look. For some reason I can't recall their name though (it's not just "Transmeta") :-?
